The Two Josh Allens of the NFL

If you’re a fan of the NFL, you most likely know about Josh Allen, star quarterback for the Buffalo Bills and one of the best quarterbacks in the league, currently. However, many people don’t know about the Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Josh Allen. Here’s a look at the two Josh Allens in the NFL and the historic name game they played:

On November 7, 2021, the two Josh Allens faced each other in a historic name game. It marked the fourth NFL game that two players on opposing sides faced each other. The previous games were:

Week 1, 1950, Eagles QB Tommy Thompson vs. Browns LB Tommy Thompson

Week 12, 1950, Eagles QB Tommy Thompson vs. Browns LB Tommy Thompson

Week 7, 1997, Bills QB Todd Collins vs. Patriots LB Todd Collins

Before the game, the Josh Allens were interviewed about the relationship between the two. Bills’ Josh Allen said, “We’ve never actually met in person. We’ve messaged on Twitter and Instagram. Obviously, we follow each other: first round, seventh pick two years in a row, Josh Allen’s the pick. That was pretty cool. We’ve shared, just exchanged messages, just common name, and draft pick. A big fan of his. He’s a great player.”

Jaguars’ Josh Allen shared the same respect, saying, “I’m just looking forward to playing against this team and looking forward to playing against him. He’s been playing at a high level recently. He’s been evading sacks recently. He’s been getting out the pocket. He’s been scrambling. His O-line does a really good job protecting him, so I love this challenge.”

Since individual sacks were first tracked in 1982, there has never been an NFL player to sack a QB with the exact same listed name. At least, not until that game between the two Josh Allens. Jaguars’ Josh Allen made history by being the first person recorded to sack an opposing quarterback with the same name.
