The Only MLB Team Still Without Pride Night Is The Texas Rangers

Except for one team Rangers, every MLB baseball team observes Pride Month in June in their own unique way.

When the Texas Rangers hosted Pride Night at their home stadium in 2003, there was so much reaction that it was never repeated.

The Rangers continue to fly the one-star, Texas flag while other MLB clubs cover their stadiums with the rainbow flag each June. The only baseball team without an LGBTQ Pride Night is this one.

The Chicago Cubs started the tradition of Baseball’s Pride in 2001. 28 other clubs have now done the same.

In an interview with The Dallas Morning News in 2020, Rangers COO Neil Leibman highlighted organizational reforms that, in his opinion, go beyond just hosting a Pride Night.

“With respect to Pride Night, we reached out to the Resource Center and said, ‘What can we do internally?’ We immediately adopted some changes they suggested to be more inclusive in hiring practices. I think that’s more meaningful than just saying, ‘OK, we had a Pride Night,’” he said.

The Rangers decided to support the community in various ways rather than covering everything with rainbow paint.

This involves establishing an inclusivity and community impact council as well as sponsoring the 2022 NAGAAA Gay Softball World Series. The franchise also collaborates with advocacy organizations like the Pegasus Slow-Pitch Softball Association and the Resource Center in Dallas.

“Our commitment is to make everyone feel welcome and included in Rangers baseball. That means in our ballpark, at every game, and in all we do – for both our fans and our employees. We deliver on that promise across our many programs to have a positive impact across our entire community,” the team responded.

After bringing the anti-Catholic parody protest organization Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to the field on June 16 for its Pride Night, the Los Angeles Dodgers, who play in the west, came under intense fire.

Around an hour before first pitch, protesters thronged the sidewalks outside Dodger Stadium as the team recognized the nun cosplay ensemble. For the Friday night game, the stadium was essentially empty at that moment.
