The Most Powerful Sports Agent Scott Boras Made Questionable Decisions That Costed His Clients

Scott Boras, an American sports agent, is worth $450 million. Boras amassed his fortune as the founder of the wildly successful sports agency The Boras Corporation.

For good cause, he is known as “the most powerful sports agent in the world.” In comparison to the athletes he represents, he has achieved substantially greater financial success. He works with around 175 well-known baseball players, who constitute the vast majority of his customers.

Boras, who has long been recognized for representing some of the game’s greatest names, had one of his most important impending free agents, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias, arrested on suspicion of domestic assault.

The Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg is another of his high-profile clients.

Max Scherzer and Anthony Rendon, both on hefty contracts, are now out for the season due to injury. While Cody Bellinger has had a resurgence in 2023, Boras made waves when he incorrectly blamed the Dodgers on his poor performance in 2021 and 2022. Despite the fact that he has a well-publicized sports performance institution where customers may train and recuperate from injuries.

He is portrayed as a money machine, and some of his noteworthy previous and present customers include Gerrit Cole, Carlos Correa, Carlos Rodon, Xander Bogaerts, Anthony Rendon, and Alex Rodriguez. Scott has currently negotiated contracts for his customers worth more than $2.5 billion, earning his agency over $100 million in fees every year.

Boras began his career in the pharmaceutical defense area of Chicago legal firm Rooks, where he later worked as an agent for Mike Fischlin.

In 1983, Scott Boras rejected down a $7.5 million deal to become a baseball agent. He resigned from his employment at the company in order to represent the athlete and provide them appropriate time. Boras is presently the company’s president and owner. In 2014, he also had the firm name featured in Forbes magazine.

Is Scott Boras Really The Best Agent

Matt Harvey was unable to reach an agreement with the Mets on a contract extension. After a promising start to his career, he battled both on and off the field, including a cocaine problem. He moved about after leaving New York, never regaining the success he enjoyed as a younger pitcher. Given his behavioral challenges, signing early may have been necessary, but by not signing, he forfeited millions in career earnings.

Dallas Keuchel is another Boras client who rejected down a contract extension with the Houston Astros at about $100 million. Soon later, Keuchel slumped, moving around multiple organizations before getting DFA’d by the Chicago White Sox.

Juan Soto was also famously given a mammoth deal of $440 million over 15 years by the Washington Nationals. While Soto has been terrific at getting on base with the Padres in 2022 and 2023, his hitting average and slugging percentage have both dropped dramatically. Despite the fact that he is only 24 years old.

He got the opportunity to represent more than 100 players on various major league clubs after 30 years as a sports agent. He set a record for managing some of the largest deals at the time.

Knowing the client is often more important than squeezing every dime. Boras does not always appear to know his client.
