Randi Trew, Chris Beard’s fiancée, issued a statement on Friday rebutting the claims she made to police about the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Texas.

Beard was detained early last week and charged with third-degree criminal assault on a member of the family or household. According to the Austin Police Department, a lady who claimed that Beard had choked her called the police with an urgent disturbance complaint at 12:15 a.m. local time on December 12. Beard, 49, was arrested at 4:18 a.m. at the Travis County Jail, and later that evening Texas suspended him indefinitely. He was replaced as interim coach by Rodney Terry.

“Chris and I are deeply saddened that we have brought negative attention upon our family, friends, and the University of Texas, among others,” Trew said. “As Chris’ fiancée and biggest supporter, I apologize for the role I played in this unfortunate event. I realize that my frustration, when breaking his glasses, initiated a physical struggle between Chris and myself. Chris did not strangle me, and I told that to law enforcement that evening.”

According to the affidavit, Trew told police that Beard had choked her five seconds. In addition, she said Beard “threw me off the bed, bit me, bruises all over my leg, throwing me around, and going nuts.”

Additionally, Trew had first claimed that she and Beard had been at odds for a few days and that the previous day Beard had “snapped on me and become really violent” after she smashed his glasses.

Trew’s statement added, “Chris has said that he was acting in self-defenses, and I do not dispute that.” “I do not believe Chris was trying to intentionally harm me in any way. It was never my intent to have him arrested or prosecuted. We value everyone’s prayers and support during this trying time.

Beard was let go after posting his $10,000 bond.

Beard angrily refuted the accusations through his counsel when his claims became public.

Coach Beard is 100 per cent innocent of these charges,” Beard’s attorney Perry Minton said after the incident. “He should never have been arrested. The complainant wants him released immediately and all charges dismissed. It is truly inconceivable.”

Beard is in his second season as the Longhorns’ head coach after signing a seven-year contract worth $7 million a season.
