Texans’ John Metchie III Battled Cancer And Now Is Back To The Field
The Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, Houston Texans, and Indianapolis Colts all started voluntary minicamps this week. The return of a particular player, wide receiver John Metchie III of the Texans, gave one of these sessions some extra oomph.
After receiving an APL (acute promyelocytic leukaemia) diagnosis last summer, Metchie missed the whole rookie campaign.

Although the public and media are prohibited from seeing the exercises, images supplied by the Texans show Metchie running and collecting passes while looking to be in terrific form.
Despite being selected by the Texans with the 44th overall choice in last year’s draft, Metchie confirmed three months later that he will miss his first season due to acute promyelocytic leukaemia.

APL, a blood-forming tissue cancer, “leads to a shortage of normal white and red blood cells and platelets in the body.” In the US, it affects around 1 in 250,000 individuals.
“Yeah, John is doing fine,” Ryans said, via Pro Football Talk. “We’ll see John get involved with our offseason program. And with John, as with every other player, we’re going to take it one day at a time and see where he can grow and where he can be when the time comes. At the right time, when the season comes, we’ll see where he is.”

Out of Alabama, Metchie was chosen with the 44th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. In the 13 games he played in during his last season with the Crimson Tide in 2021, he caught 96 catches for 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns. Unfortunately, he suffered an ACL tear during that season’s SEC Championship game.
