Teddy Bridgewater Comments on Other Football Players Trying to be “Gangsta”

Miami Dolphins quarterback Teddy Bridgewater comments on other football players trying to be “gangsta”, saying that many players are only “football tough” and wouldn’t actually be able to back up a street image. Bridgewater’s criticism of such behavior was met with much praise by other athletic figures, such as Stefon Diggs, Micah Parsons, and Lebron James.

Bridgewater talks about how most football players went through college and even got a degree, something that is unbecoming of what people might consider “gangsta”. He talks about how it’s not smart to act “street tough” especially when you’re trying to make an honest, legal living. He also places responsibility on other players, saying that there’s kids looking up to them and people in jail for “street toughness” that would advise players to stop acting tough. He said, “I’m far from perfect, but I chose the ball route but I still can go to the hood and post up and it’s all love. My people accept me for making all the right decisions and not falling victim or being tricked by the false image you see on IG from a lot of ball players.

Bridgewater’s comments arrive in the midst of athletes facing legal trouble. NFL players like Deshaun Watson and NBA players like Miles Bridges are currently facing legal troubles, and while their cases don’t have to do with pretending to be “street tough”, it raises a great point about players that have worked hard to be paid for being one of the best athletes in the world in their respective sport, and yet throw it all away for loyalties and ideals they considered greater than simply perfecting their game, building their wealth, and giving back to the community.
