Shortly after the Cowboys coach apologised to the photojournalist, a picture of Mike McCarthy stiff-arming a cameraman on Sunday night went viral.

Story Behind Cowboys’ Mike McCarthy Stiff-Arming Cameraman After Loss to 49ers

The incident involving Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy stiff-arming a photographer following their Sunday Divisional Round loss to the 49ers had more to it than meets the eye.

After appearing to shove a cameraman while leaving the field at Levi’s Stadium, McCarthy drew criticism overnight. However, after the incident, the cameraman defended the 59-year-old coach on Twitter and stated that they had a private meeting in the locker room.

The Dallas-Fort Worth NBC affiliate’s Noah Bullard shared a video of the incident from his point of view, explaining why he didn’t think it was a “push.”

“Thank you to everyone that has reached out regarding the Mike McCarthy incident,” Noah Bullard, a photographer for NBC 5 Sports, tweeted. “I can see how the photo appeared like he pushed me but it was more of a hand to the lens. I did meet with coach McCarthy privately in his office and he did apologize.”

Bullard added that he is “completely fine” and that the “event appears worse on still photographs.” Bullard, who remained upright while teetering on the field with his camera in tow, is not directly addressed by McCarthy. Bullard was one of numerous media personnel on the field after the game, snapping pictures and recordings.

Jerry Jones, the owner of the Cowboys, claimed the 19-12 defeat will not have an effect on McCarthy’s employment position.

No, no, no, not at all,” Jones said when asked if the outcome had changed his mind about McCarthy. “… This is very sickening to not win tonight.”

McCarthy has lost to the 49ers in the playoffs twice despite having just completed back-to-back 12-win seasons. McCarthy, who had a Super Bowl victory in 2010 with the Green Bay Packers, had a 6-10 record in his first year in Dallas.

Since the 1995 campaign, when they defeated the Steelers to win the Super Bowl, the Cowboys have not advanced to the NFC Championship.
