Steve Sarkisian Clears The Air On QB Controversy: ‘Quinn Ewers is Texas’ starting quarterback’

Despite the fact that Arch Manning stole the show at Texas’ spring game this past Saturday, head coach Steve Sarkisian decided to start another quarterback for the Longhorns.

Quinn Ewers is the Longhorns’ starting quarterback, according to Sarkisian, who addressed the media following Texas’ Orange-White spring game this afternoon.

Sarkisian stated, “I think it’s pretty clear to say that Quinn’s our starting quarterback,” according to Taylor Estes of Horns247. “And we feel very good about that.”

Steve Sarkisian Clears The Air On QB Controversy: ‘Quinn Ewers is Texas’ starting quarterback’

High-level quarterback teaching is nothing new for Steve Sarkisian; it dates back to his days at USC, Washington, and Alabama, among other places.

Numerous quarterbacks who Sarkisian coached have been selected in the NFL draughts, including USC’s Carson Palmer, Washington’s Jake Locker, and ultimately Alabama’s Mac Jones.

Due to Sarkisian’s previous success with quarterbacks, Quinn Ewers was recruited via the transfer portal during the 2022 recruiting cycle, and Arch Manning was signed in the 2023 class just one year later.

Ewers is still the man in Austin, despite the quarterback drama that Manning’s committment sparked. Despite this, Sarkisian recently appeared on The Pivot Podcast and spoke with Ryan Clark, Fred Taylor, and Channing Crowder about what makes Manning unique.

“The beauty of it is this – he’s a kid. He’s a college kid,” Sarkisian said. “So many times you see the Manning name and you think he’s this perfect in a box, nothing’s wrong with him. I’m not saying anything is wrong with him, but he’s still a kid.”

To hear Sarkisian identify the Longhorns’ starting signal caller thus early in the season is quite unexpected. But the Texas coach has definitely allayed any serious worries about a potential quarterback spat between Ewers and Manning, at least for the time being.

During the Longhorns’ spring game, Ewers completed 16 of 23 throws for 195 yards and a score.

On the other side, Manning only managed five completions on his 13 tries, totaling just 30 passing yards. He also ran for 15 yards to get the Longhorns a first down.

On this particular day, freshman Maalik Murphy, Texas’ other highly regarded quarterback, was a greater threat to Ewers than Manning. On Saturday, he completed 165 passes for 165 yards, including a 79-yard touchdown pass to rookie receiver Johntay Cook.
