Spurs HC Gregg Popovich Calls Steve Kerr “A—hole” For His Wembanyama Comment

Even though the NBA regular season hasn’t started yet, Gregg Popovich is already at his most acerbic.

Victor Wembanyama, a Frenchman chosen first overall by the Spurs in the most recent NBA Draft, is beginning to wow fans.

Spurs HC Gregg Popovich Calls Steve Kerr “A—hole” For His Wembanyama Comment

In their preseason game against the Warriors on Friday night, Wembanyama scored 19 points and the Spurs prevailed 122-117, making several moves that were worthy of being highlighted.

Following tonight’s preseason game between the Spurs and Warriors, a Spurs reporter emphasized Kerr’s belief that Victor Wembanyama had “rejuvenated” Pop.

That was probably meant as a praise by Kerr. After all, Pop’s Spurs haven’t had a season winning percentage above.458 and haven’t made the playoffs in the previous four years.

“What was I being rejuvenated from?” said Popovich. “Was I in a mental institution or was I depressed and curled up in my bedroom or something? Steve’s an a**hole, and I’m gonna tell him that tonight after the game.”

Thankfully, Pop chuckled when he said that, which defused the tension in the room.

So far, Wembanyama has responded well to Popovich’s coaching and expressed gratitude for it.

“This is how I also recognize how good of a person he is,” Wembanyama said earlier this week of Popovich, according to the San Antonio Express-News. “He just learns. He just learned to know me, quicker than almost anyone I’ve met in my life before.”

Despite the fact that Pop obviously doesn’t think he’s slowing down, these last four years haven’t been easy. After all, their performance did not translate into the number one overall choice.

Thankfully, Wembanyama appears to be exactly the player the Spurs want him to be. He has performed really well in the preseason and is ready for a successful debut season.
