Ryan Fitzpatrick Sees A Huge “Red Flag” When It Comes To Jets Zach Wilson

Since making his NFL debut as a rookie last year, Zach Wilson, the quarterback for the New York Jets, has been one of the quarterbacks with the lowest ratings. There is one particular “huge red flag” that, according to former Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, doesn’t augur well for Wilson’s professional future.

Fitzpatrick criticized the team’s choice to hire Wilson’s personal quarterback coach John Beck in an interview with the New York Post, saying it “scares” him a little bit and is “a giant red flag.” He emphasized that it demonstrates that Wilson is receiving excessive support from the team and that he is simply not focused on winning.

In his NFL career, which lasted from 2005 to 2021 and included a two-season stint with the Jets, Fitzpatrick started 147 games. He currently works for Amazon as a studio analyst for “Thursday Night Football.”

The Post questioned Ryan Fitzpatrick about what advice he would give the Jets over whether Wilson is the starter of the future or if the hourglass is already running out after Wilson threw three interceptions in a defeat to the Patriots on Sunday amid a sophomore season of relative inconsistency.

He was afforded some time at the beginning of this season to sit back and watch someone who’s been successful and done it for a long time in Joe Flacco, to see the things he does to prepare for a game, the adjustments during the game and he [Wilson] just has to get into a better flow now of understanding what the team needs from him. Some of those wild throws off his back foot and the scrambles — this is a good enough team to where they don’t need that.”

“…one of the biggest question marks I’ve had about him, and the thing that scared me last year, is when they called John Beck, his personal quarterback coach, to come out and help get his mind right during the season, and put him on staff,” Ryan Fitzpatrick said. “To me, that was a giant red flag. I don’t know Zach Wilson, but that scares me a little bit.

To be fair to Zach Wilson, he has had to deal with pressure practically every time he dropped back for a ball since the offensive line has been so weak since his rookie season.

Despite only participating in 13 games, he lost a league-high 370 yards to sacks last season. In 18 career starts, he has had more than 9% of his passing plays sacked.

But several quarterbacks have at least performed admirably despite continually facing opposing defenders. Something doesn’t seem to fit.
