Russell Wilson Tried For Unprecedented Contract Before Signing With Steelers

The majority of former Super Bowl winner Russell Wilson’s £30 million ($38 million) salary will remain with the Denver Broncos, after Wilson signed to a one-year minimum contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Russell Wilson Tried For Unprecedented Contract Before Signing With Steelers

Wilson announced on Sunday night that, following his release from the Broncos, he would be signing with the Steelers. The 35-year-old took to X to write: “Year 13. Thank you, @Steelers.

Wilson will get a minimum salary of £940,000 ($1.21m) from Pittsburgh, with the Broncos covering the remaining £30m ($38m) of his compensation. After making a blockbuster trade to arrive in Denver in 2022, Wilson accepted a five-year contract for £188 million ($242.6 million), but he had a terrible time playing.

Russell Wilson’s agent attempted to persuade teams interested in signing the quarterback to accept a 2025 player option that would be “unprecedented massive,” according to a Monday morning report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Pelissero stated on “Good Morning Football” that Russell Wilson’s agent, Mark Rodgers, has been contacting teams across the league recently to see if they would add an unprecedented, enormous player option for 2025 to offer Wilson the ability to lock in future guarantees.

Wilson signed a contract with the Steelers even though he isn’t officially a free agent yet because the Broncos granted him permission to negotiate with other teams after notifying him on March 4 that he would be released on March 13, the first day of the new league year. Wilson accepted an offer from the Steelers right now, but he can’t sign it until Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET.

Over the past two days, Wilson has met with both the Giants and the Steelers, but it’s obvious that he liked what he saw in Pittsburgh more.

Wilson was never going to make any more money this next season off of this contract since the Broncos, who stated last week that they were planning to release him, owe him $39 million.

It spared the Steelers’ pay limit a significant amount of damage while enabling them to give the 35-year-old a shot.

However, any club that had accepted the player option ran the potential of finding themselves in a situation like to the one the Broncos encountered over the offseason.

Pelissero stated that he anticipates competition for the starting position in training camp between Wilson and Kenny Pickett, who is about to begin his third season in the NFL.

“There were a couple of strong advocates for Russell Wilson in Pittsburgh throughout the process,” Pelissero said. “One of them was the veteran defensive lineman Cameron Heyward who like Russell Wilson is a former Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award winner. Heyward was certainly a strong voice in the locker room in wanting Wilson brought aboard.

“The other was head coach Mike Tomlin who spent a lot of time with Wilson in a visit to the team facility on Friday… (Wilson) had another in-depth conversation with Tomlin on Sunday and then announced (the decision) himself in a hype video on social media.”

If Wilson defeats Pickett to start, the Steelers’ victory total will go from 8 to 8.6, and their chances of making the playoffs would rise from 30.3% to 42%, according to predictions made by SportsLine statistics guru Stephen Oh.

The 35-year-old’s career has been on a downhill slope for the previous three seasons, but he will now get an opportunity to demonstrate his playing ability after moving to Pittsburgh. The Steelers are hoping he can rekindle the magic that once guided the Seattle Seahawks to two consecutive titles in the Super Bowl.

How much do the Broncos owe Russell Wilson?

Due to offset wording in his contract, he owes the Broncos $39 million guaranteed in 2024, less the amount of a contract he gets with another club. That may be as little as the league minimum of $1.2 million

Why are the Broncos cutting Wilson?

Wilson agreed to a five-year, $245 million contract deal with Denver, according to NBCSports.com. The squad didn’t get the desired results from the acquisition.

Does Russell Wilson have kids with his first wife?

The former couple never welcomed any children into their marriage.
