Russell Wilson Gets Contract Extension, Bad News For Lamar?
On Thursday morning, quarterback Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos agreed to a rumoured five-year, $245 million contract extension on Thursday. The agreement includes $165 million in guaranteed money. Only Deshaun Watson’s $230 million and Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray’s $189.5 million guaranteed contracts in NFL history are more lucrative than Wilson’s arrangement. Since he has a deal with the team through 2028, it also commits the 33-year-career old to them for the foreseeable future as he aspires to follow in the footsteps of John Elway and Peyton Manning by leading Denver to the Super Bowl plateau.

How Does This Extension Affect Lamar Jackson?

Because Murray’s previously mentioned contract and the fully guaranteed $230 million awarded QB Deshaun Watson by the Cleveland Browns are tied, and Wilson’s agreement sets a precedent.
Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens are now negotiating an extension of his rookie contract, and the Wilson contract provides Raven’s general manager Eric DeCosta reason to claim that Watson’s salary is an outlier. The deadlock might be a deal-breaker if Jackson doesn’t share those sentiments and chooses to base his negotiations on Watson’s record-breaking commitment.
Lamar Jackson is fantastic, but after seeing Russell Wilson’s extension, he can't be thrilled about his prospects of getting a fully-guaranteed deal.

Here is the argument Jackson may use to demonstrate how he differs from Wilson:
Jackson is 25 years old. Wilson, however, will age 34 during the current campaign and turn 40 when the extension expires. Wilson is infamous for never receiving an MVP vote, but Jackson was given the honour in 2019 with a unanimous vote.
The issue? In addition, Wilson has played in eight Pro Bowls and has won a Super Bowl during the course of his time with the Seattle Seahawks.
Although Wilson’s promises give Baltimore a stronger negotiating stance, the Ravens and Jackson can argue against them for days.
Best thing I heard from Russell Wilson today is his answer to why he didn't reset the QB market/demand to be the highest paid in the league:

Effect Upon The NFL Quarterback Market?

There is no possibility NFL players will make any significant progress toward the kinds of fully guaranteed contracts their NBA and MLB colleagues inevitably receive until the top quarterbacks start pushing the envelope. The NFLPA and other agents in the league had high hopes that Wilson’s contract would establish a new benchmark for guarantees. It’s difficult to see how this deal could have made any significant market movement. And while it’s understandable that the best quarterbacks don’t demand guarantees because they don’t require them. After all, the best quarterbacks are never cut.
