The program debuted in 2001, went on hiatus from 2003 to 2006, and has since returned every season.
Hard Knocks last featured the Jets during the 2010 campaign. The sixth season of the show had some notable events for head coach Rex Ryan.
.@AdamSchefter put it all out there this morning saying the #Jets ‘fought it all along’ in reference to #HardKnocks, ‘they met w/ @NFLFilms & told them clear as day we don’t want to do this’ + ‘Hard Knocks will not be the same because they’re not going to be given the same… pic.twitter.com/ItnpFYwo9E

The Jets were just formally revealed as the star of the long-running HBO series on Monday, with training camp slated to begin on Wednesday, since they did not want to be the topic of the show. Usually by May, the team’s selection will be made public.
“No coach wants to do ‘Hard Knocks,'” Former Jets coach and “Hard Knocks” star Rex Ryan, who currently serves as an NFL analyst for ESPN, spoke to The Post. Nobody wants to carry it out.

It took so long to name the 2023 Jets because they really didn’t want to do it.
Rodgers said last week that the NFL “forced it down [the Jets] throats.” Ryan dismissed the idea that Rodgers would be challenging since he is at ease with himself.

“I think Aaron Rodgers is going to be freaking great,” Ryan said. “Aaron Rodgers is extremely confident in himself. Yeah, he’s different, but so what? He embraces it. He ain’t a guy that is going to run from anything. He could care less. He’s going to be him and I think that’s great. I think people will enjoy it.”

Mark Sanchez, who is well known for the notorious butt fumble, was coached by Ryan, and he also guided the squad to two straight AFC Championship berths. Few teams since those back-to-back visits can say that they were able to advance so far in such a way.

The former head coach has been out of the league for about ten years as of 2023, yet he has continued to be visible in the media as a guest on ESPN shows.
