Reports: Patriots Fan Dies In An Altercation At Gillette Stadium

Dale Mooney, a Newmarket, New Hampshire, resident, was brought to Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro after the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office stated he seemed to be in “need of medical attention” following an altercation in the 300s deck of Gillette Stadium shortly before 11 p.m. ET.

The terrible occurrence occurred in the 308/309 area of the stadium at about 11 p.m. ET, during the fourth quarter of the Patriots’ 17-24 loss. Mooney was transported to Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro but was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

Gillette Stadium officials issued a statement stating they are “heartbroken” about the loss of Dale Mooney, who died after an apparent brawl during the Patriots-Dolphins game on Sunday.

Witnesses informed WBZ that they spotted a confrontation between Mooney, a New Hampshire father of two, and a Dolphins fan. According to witnesses, Mooney was attacked during a verbal argument and never recovered consciousness.

“We are heartbroken to learn of the tragic passing of Dale Mooney, a lifelong Patriots fan and 30-year season ticket member, who died while attending last Sunday night’s Patriots game,” stadium officials said on Tuesday. “We continue to work with local authorities to assist them with their ongoing investigation. We extend our sincerest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to Dale’s family  and to all those who are mourning his loss.”

Lisa Mooney, Mooney’s wife, told Boston 25 that her husband went to the Week 2 game with several friends but was attacked by some Dolphins fans while in their area.

According to a witness, a Miami supporter assaulted Mooney.

“The Dolphins fan walks over and clearly punches him in the face,” New Hampshire resident Joey Kilmartin said. “[He] gets knocked out, and you can tell right away he’s not OK.”

The district attorney’s office described the inquiry into Mooney’s death as “normal protocol.” The autopsy report’s preliminary results are due on Tuesday.
