Reports: Patriots & Bill Belichick Signed A Lucrative Contract Ahead Of 2023 Season
Someone has leaked an intriguing nugget to the NFL’s in-house media conglomerate at a time when cries are growing for the Patriots to end the Bill Belichick era and ownership has been noticeably silent about the issue.
Reports: Patriots & Bill Belichick Signed A Lucrative Contract Ahead Of 2023 Season
On NFL Network’s pregame broadcast, Ian Rapoport began the hour with, “Sources say Bill Belichick during the offseason quietly agreed to terms on a lucrative, multi-year, new contract.” “As per the contract, he is currently indefinitely jailed.
From @NFLGameDay: This past offseason, #Patriots coach Bill Belichick quietly agreed to a lucrative multi-year new contract, sources say. That, at least, adds some context to the discussions about the greatest coach in NFL history. pic.twitter.com/ZPjRxzMVzJ

It is highly appropriate that the details of this arrangement are now being made public. The Patriots are having a difficult season unlike any other under Belichick. Mac Jones, the quarterback, has been benched in two of his previous three starts, and they are 1-5. On a larger scale, Belichick is 19-21 since Brady left three years ago. Given all of this, reports have been swirling about Belichick’s job security for the last few weeks.

Their current start is the poorest since 1995, which was long before Bill took charge. Even worse, the Pats are four games behind the Miami Dolphins, who lead the AFC East, and are now in the midst of a three-game losing run during which they have only scored 20 points.

Stated differently, they are not the Patriots of your father.
As a result, many supporters have conjectured that this season may mark the end of Foxboro’s Belichick era. That is, until Ian Rapoport of NFL Network revealed some explosive information during Sunday’s pregame program.
Although Rapoport did not reveal the details of the Patriots’ financial commitment to Belichick, it is reasonable to assume that it would be costly for team owner Robert Kraft to sever ties with his longtime head coach, who during his two decades in charge helped the team win six Super Bowl titles with Tom Brady.
BREAKING:
Per: @RapSheet
“Bill Belichick, during the offseason, quietly agreed to terms on a lucrative contract extension.”
“Contractually, he is locked in long term.”

Sincerely, Kraft would have stated as much by now if Belichick was certain to leave after this season. Nothing is guaranteed under the new deal. Additionally, Kraft’s last meaningful remarks on the matter were made in March, when he implied—albeit subtly—that Belichick’s attempt to break the franchise record for victories depended on his team winning enough games to qualify for the postseason this year.
