Reports: Jets Had Plans To Trade QB Matthew Stafford Before Aaron Rodgers

According to NFL Media, the New York Jets called an audible after negotiations with Aaron Rodgers stagnated and asked about the potential availability of Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford.

Reports: Jets Had Plans To Trade QB Matthew Stafford Before Aaron Rodgers

According to the report, conversations between the two teams were brief and to the point. The Rams, who acquired Stafford from the Lions two years ago in exchange for a plethora of selections, decided not to deal their quarterback. Rodgers was eventually acquired by the Jets after a trade agreement was reached with the Packers.

It was informed by two sources that Los Angeles was certain that Stafford would remain put. The 35-year-old was also contacted by other clubs looking for a quarterback, but despite his 2022 season being cut short by injuries, no agreement could be reached.

Due to Stafford’s limited playing time and injuries to his spinal cord and head, other teams began to wonder whether the Rams were planning to rebuild from scratch. However, Los Angeles intends to start Stafford at quarterback this year, and it obviously worked well for the Jets as well.

Other clubs also contacted the Rams to enquire about Stafford’s potential availability besides the New York Jets. This offseason, Los Angeles did deal a good player, but it wasn’t Stafford who went to the Dolphins; it was cornerback Jalen Ramsey, a stalwart of the Pro Bowl.

Teams calling about Stafford was flattering, according to Stafford.

“I just know that I’m really happy where I am,” Stafford said at the start of training camp in July. “Playing for this team, for this coach, and for these fans.”

After months of discussions, the Jets finally acquired Aaron Rodgers in an April trade.

The Jets are getting ready for a highly anticipated debut under Rodgers as they get ready to play the Bills in prime time on Monday night.
