Reports: Hawks To Trade Point Guard Trae Young For This Player Of Mavs?

Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks was the subject of several trade rumours over the weekend, but it’s his classmate Trae Young from the 2018 NBA Draft who may be more likely to leave the Atlanta Hawks this offseason.

There’s a chance that this will be the final playoffs that the nucleus of this club is together as the Atlanta Hawks prepare to meet the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference’s 7-8 play-in game on Tuesday night.

Reports: Hawks To Trade Point Guard Trae Young For This Player Of Mavs?

Could Trae Young, in particular, be wearing a different uniform sooner rather than later? According to The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor: “[The] Hawks’ front office has the green light from ownership to do whatever it wants to with the roster, which includes considering trade opportunities involving All-Star point guard Trae Young.”

More from O’Connor:

“Given what has happened during the season, this shouldn’t really be a surprise. Tony Ressler, the owner of the Hawks, said in March that he is neither allowing nor disallowing any players from being traded.

There had been team meetings and concerns about Young’s leadership months before, according to Shams Charania and Sam Amick’s reporting on rising tensions between Young and the previous head coach Nate McMillan. According to reports, players chose the coach over their top player.

Things got so ugly that TNT’s Chris Haynes reported that Young could request a trade this summer if the Hawks fail to make “inroads” in the playoffs.”

Luka Doncic, who doesn’t seem to be too thrilled with the Dallas Mavericks, may replace him if he leaves the team.

Although Doncic, 24, also fell in the conference finals, since since Dallas acquired him in the 2018 NBA Draft through a trade, many people believe he is a superior talent to Young.

The Mavericks, who now worry that Doncic would ask for a trade in 2024, sent the Hawks Young and an additional first-round selection in exchange for these items.

Atlanta fired Nate McMillan as their head coach this season after rumours of a spat with Young. Quin Snyder was later recruited on a five-year contract with the intention of leading the squad back into title contention.

Since being selected in 2018, Young has served as the team’s focal point. The 24-year-old averaged 26.2 points, 10.2 assists, and 3.0 rebounds while shooting 42.9 percent from outside the arc in 73 games in ’22-’23.

Since Young’s arrival, Atlanta has won two postseason series, both of which occurred during its run to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2020–21. In the next two seasons, the team was unable to capitalise on that success, and it appears ownership is considering some significant changes as a consequence.

As they attempt to secure a spot in the playoffs, the Hawks will take against the Heat in the NBA play-in round.
