Reports: Giants To Trade In Boogie Basham In Order To Strengthen Defensive Line

Boogie Basham, a defensive end, was acquired by the New York Giants from the Buffalo Bills in a trade.

The Giants released third-round selection Oshane Ximines on Tuesday due to the addition of additional reinforcements to the roster, a source informed ESPN. He had 6.5 sacks with the Giants in his career.

Out of Wake Forest, Basham was selected by the Bills in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Joe Schoen, the current general manager of the Giants, was a member of the Buffalo front office at the time of the pick. Brian Daboll, the current head coach of the Giants, was the offensive coordinator for the Bills at the time and took a close look at Basham during workouts.

As a rookie, Basham participated in eight games and had 2.5 sacks. In 2022, he participated in 15 games and recorded two sacks, one interception, and one forced fumble.

In 23 career games with no starts, he has made a total of 37 tackles.

Last season, Basham participated in 39 percent of the Bills’ defensive snaps. In his four postseason appearances, he has also recorded two sacks.

Basham is the kind of guy Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale can frequently use because of his good stature (6-foot-3, 281 pounds) and ability to provide pressure to the quarterback.

Before the 2021 draft, NFL draft expert Lance Zierlein had the following to say about Basham:

Three-year starter at defensive end with burly frame, heavy hands and an ability to take on physical rigors of the NFL. His rush attack is more technical and explosive, using active hands, spin counters and a thoughtful approach. His lack of suddenness and edge speed could get him pegged as an early-down end while moving inside to become an interior rusher on passing downs. He needs to become comfortable handling the heavy lifting as a run defender as he’s much more likely to be a worker bee than playmaker in that regard. He’s strong and plays heavy at the point of attack with leverage to sit down  and battle for his space of turf. He’s unlikely to produce headline-making production, but should be a good pro.

In his two seasons with Buffalo, Basham, 25, has recorded 20 total tackles and 4.5 sacks. He adds depth to a Giants outside linebacker group that was thin behind starters Kayvon Thibodeaux and Azeez Ojulari.
