Reports: Coach Sean Payton At least Wants $20 Million A Year On Return

According to published reports, Sean Payton is seeking a coaching position that will pay him between $20 million and $25 million a year. However, it’s not really news. It’s assumed.

Reports: Coach Sean Payton At least Wants $20 Million A Year On Return

It was rumoured that the Dolphins would have given Payton $100 million on either a five-year or four-year agreement once it became clear last year that his move to the team was a deal that had already been done behind the scenes but had been scuttled by the Brian Flores lawsuit. This would have generated $20 million to $25 million on average annually.

Given the availability of quarterback Justin Herbert, it would have been intriguing to see if Payton would have scaled back his goals for leading the Chargers. But unless Payton skips 2023 and the Chargers make a change in 2024, that one won’t happen.

For coaches, there is no wage ceiling. Additionally, there is no salary ceiling and no spending cap. NFL teams have generally been successful in preventing bidding wars for coaches, with most teams prepared to hold the line, as the Giants did three years ago when the Panthers overpaid for Matt Rhule.

Payton spoke with Saints GM Mickey Loomis to discuss a new landing spot in 2023. He explained on The Herd with Colin Cowherd that New Orleans anticipates at the very least a first-round pick.

“I know Mickey well. He’s got a job to do as a general manager with the Saints,” he told Cowherd. “He’ll get the right compensation. If it (negotiations) gets that far, he will arrive at it.”

On Monday, Payton had an interview with the Houston Texans to become their head coach. On Friday, the 59-year-old is supposed to meet with David Tepper, owner of the Carolina Panthers.

If the Panthers and Broncos finish up in a tug-of-war for Payton this season, things might get interesting. The mega-billionaires from Wal-Mart who purchased the Denver franchise are the two wealthiest ownership groups, and they have significantly more money than Panthers owner David Tepper, who has a net worth of $17 billion.

Currently, the New Orleans Saints, whom Payton coached from 2013 to 2021, still hold the rights to the head coach.
