REPORT: Philadelphia 76ers to be Investigated For Tampering Following Knicks’ Expected Penalty For Jalen Brunson

Prior to the start of free agency, Jalen Brunson allegedly opted to join the Knicks. Rick Brunson, the father of Brunson, was employed by the Knicks as an assistant coach. Leon Rose, the president of the Knicks, has known the Brunsons for a very long time. Sam Rose, the son of Rose, represents Jalen Brunson. Due to their interference with Jalen Brunson, the Knicks are likely to face punishment. They aren’t the only team being investigated. The Philadelphia 76ers moved swiftly to sign free agents.

Minutes into free agency, they signed PJ Tucker to a rumored 3-year, $33.2 million contract, and it was widely believed that the deal for Tucker to join Philadelphia was largely finalized before the time ever started.

There are several ties between Tucker and the Sixers. On the Houston Rockets, where Daryl Morey served as general manager, he was a teammate of James Harden’s. The 76ers were reportedly planning to sign P. J. Tucker, who was still officially under contract with the Heat, days before free agency began.

Philadelphia 76ers might be investigated for tampering

Marc Stein reported on Substack: “I’m told that Philadelphia’s signing of P. J. Tucker is also likely to be placed under the investigation microscope by the league office.”

“Tucker, of course, was signed away from the Miami Heat, who were docked a second-round pick as a penalty for “early free agency discussions” connected to their sign-and-trade acquisition of Kyle Lowry last summer.”

Morey is not unfamiliar with this. In the past, he had been punished for tampering. Given how quickly the Tucker acquisition was made, Philadelphia has a high probability of receiving another tampering violation fine. There was a lot of smoke before the fire that Philadelphia would really sign Tucker, and tampering is usual. It is not a smart answer for the league to penalize certain clubs for tampering breaches and not others.
