Ray Allen named basketball coach at Miami prep school
Hall of Fame guard Ray Allen has been named to lead the basketball programs at Gulliver Preparatory School in Miami.
“We are excited to announce that we have selected Ray Allen as our new Director of Boys and Girls Basketball,” the school posted to its Twitter account Friday. “He will also serve as our Varsity Boys Basketball Head Coach. Coach Allen brings unparalleled expertise to the helm of our basketball programs. Join us in welcoming him!”
Allen, 46, played three seasons at UConn before becoming the No. 5 overall pick in the 1996 NBA Draft. He played in 1,300 games (1,149 starts) over 18 seasons in the NBA with the Milwaukee Bucks (1996-2003), Seattle SuperSonics (2003-07), Boston Celtics (2007-12) and Miami Heat (2012-14).
A 10-time All-Star, he won NBA titles with the Celtics in 2008 and Heat in 2013, as well as a gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He was enshrined into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.
As coach, Allen undoubtedly will help the team’s long-range shooting. A career 40 percent shooter from 3-point range, Allen is the NBA’s all-time leader in 3-point field goals with 2,973, though the Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry (2,832) is poised to pass him.
Gulliver Prep is scheduled to begin its season Nov. 30 against Sports Leadership & Management, a public charter school in Miami.
