Quarterback Sam Darnold On Why He Chose To Sign With 49ers

While staying in California, Sam Darnold made a name for himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the nation. He gained notoriety as a four-star recruit out of San Clemente, and after shown enough promise at USC, the New York Jets took him third overall in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Darnold is now back in California after signing with the San Francisco 49ers in free agency, despite the ups and downs of his NFL career.

Quarterback Sam Darnold On Why He Chose To Sign With 49ers

Darnold made the decision to sign with San Francisco despite the fact that the 49ers have a few choices for their main quarterback. Why? During his participation on the “Pardon My Take” podcast, he was questioned about it.

Darnold thinks there is a significant gap between the talent he is used to and the level of talent on the 49ers, a club that last season came one game away from making it to the Super Bowl.

“Guys are open,” he said on a recent episode of the Pardon My Take podcast.

“It just seems like there’s a ton of answers. Great run game. I mean, whenever you can have a great run game as a quarterback, that’s always a comforting feeling.”

Darnold also heaped praise on head coach Kyle Shanahan, claiming that Shanahan has been able to play to several of the guys’ abilities.

“Kyle’s been able to understand kind of what everyone does well, what they don’t do well, and I feel like every game plan he uses gets the most out of his guys,” said the former USC quarterback.

“That’s a very good feeling as a quarterback, knowing that the [coach] is going to put everyone in the best position possible.”

After getting hurt during the preseason the previous season, Darnold started for the Carolina Panthers in Week 12 and went 4-2 with an average of 190.5 passing yards per game, nine total touchdowns, and three interceptions to go along with it. In his six starts, he had a solid football game and had an EPA per play ranking in the top 10 in the league.
