QB Mac Jones Reveals Why He Drifted Paths With Patriots

The deal that moved Mac Jones from the New England Patriots to the Jacksonville Jaguars wasn’t a surprise to him. Jones kind of saw it coming.

QB Mac Jones Reveals Why He Drifted Paths With Patriots

Jones recently revealed that, previous to the organization trading him to the Jaguars for a sixth-round selection, he and the Patriots had mutually decided to split ways. His three-year tenure with the Patriots, which had its share of highs and lows, came to an end with the trade.

The day after free agency opened, Jones was dealt to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a 2024 sixth-round selection, a move he claims both parties felt was in their best interests following three disastrous seasons in which he threw 46 touchdowns and 36 interceptions.

“We kind of just decided the mutual parting of ways was the best decision for both of us,” Jones said from Jacksonville this week, via the Boston Herald. “For me, it was just about moving on and getting back home, and I couldn’t be more excited. And for them, it’s about moving forward and turning the page. So really, that’s what we decided, and I think it’s a great decision.”

According to CBS Sports Lead NFL Insider Jonathan Jones, only the Jaguars made an offer to the Patriots for the former top-15 draft selection, despite reports that four other teams were also in the running.

Jones, the 15th overall selection in the 2021 draft, helped the Patriots make their only post-Tom Brady playoff berth that season, earning him a spot in the Pro Bowl. Nevertheless, Mac and the Patriots declined the next two seasons, with Jones being benched in the second half of 2023 after starting the team and finishing 2-9.

Jones had a disappointing rookie season in which he passed for 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns, 13 interceptions, and was selected to the Pro Bowl. He struggled to find any consistency under offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien the previous season and offensive play-caller Matt Patricia in 2022.

As the Patriots’ starting quarterback, he played 18–24, throwing for 8,918 yards, finishing 66.1% of his passes, and had an 85.8 passer rating. In Jacksonville, he is anticipated to face off against C.J. Beathard and Nathan Rourke for Trevor Lawrence’s backup spot.

The Patriots’ intention to choose a quarterback with the third overall choice in the April draft is further confirmed by Trading Jones. Jayden Daniels, the quarterback prospect ranked second by CBS Sports after Caleb Williams of USC, is a product of LSU and has been connected to New England.

The Jaguars have improved their backup quarterback situation by adding Jones.
