QB Lamar Jackson Sparks Rumors With Ravens Via A Social Media Message

When Lamar Jackson wrote on his Instagram story on Monday morning, he might have been alluding to his future with the Ravens.

It appears that Jackson is trying to communicate with the Ravens about his upcoming contract expiration via a statement that was reposted on his page, which means Jackson did not create the quote himself.

“When you have something good,” Jackson posted on his Instagram story, “you don’t play with it. You don’t take chances losing it. You don’t neglect it. When you have something good, you pour into it. You appreciate it. Because when you take care of something good, that good thing takes care of you too.”

The remark will be seen as a warning to the Ravens. They declined to offer him a five-year contract with a full guarantee in 2022. More recently, the organisation has expressed frustration at his refusal to participate in the postseason while still nursing a sprained PCL.

Jackson appears to have avoided doing anything over the past two years that may cast him in a negative light. Deshaun Watson did this as one of the many things he did to get a five-year, fully-guaranteed deal from the Browns, so he might as well embrace the role and make it clear he’s done if the Ravens are going to subtly characterise him that way (and/or fail to fight back against the efforts of outside voices to do so).

It’s possible that this will occur in the upcoming weeks. All options are on the table, beginning with a new push to negotiate a long-term agreement. It’s difficult to envision a transaction being completed at a time when things feel tense and dysfunctional, given that the two sides were unable to go forward while their relationship was solid.

The next question is whether the Ravens will use the non-exclusive franchise tag, which would allow Lamar and other teams to negotiate and possibly result in an offer sheet or a trade.

The 2019 NFL MVP hasn’t played since Week 13 as he deals with a knee injury. After the Ravens officially were eliminated from the playoffs in Sunday night’s 24–17 wild-card loss to the Bengals, Baltimore now will focus its attention on offseason priorities.
