QB Jimmy Garoppolo Speaks Out On Trey Lance’s Trade To Cowboys

Jimmy Garoppolo may be the only NFL quarterback who is familiar with the challenges and pains of the position from both perspectives.

QB Jimmy Garoppolo Speaks Out On Trey Lance’s Trade To Cowboys

Before being transferred to the San Francisco 49ers, Garoppolo spent four seasons as Tom Brady’s backup with the New England Patriots, where he first encountered the discomfort of doing so. Before suddenly returning and leading San Francisco to seven victories in 10 starts a year ago, Garoppolo went through the even odd preseason dance with the 49ers, worrying about when (or if) he would be released.

Given the ups and downs of Garoppolo’s final season in San Francisco, it shouldn’t be a surprise that he has doubts about the team’s previous treatment of quarterbacks.

Trey Lance, a young quarterback, was just moved to the Dallas Cowboys in order to further his career; he was fortunate to avoid being released from the league like many others have in recent days. When he moves to Dallas, Cooper Rush and Dak Prescott, who are vying for the QB1 spot, will have a formidable battle.

Garoppolo spent two years as Trey Lance’s mentor before serving as the 49ers’ backup quarterback, giving him insight into what switching clubs might mean for a quarterback left without a job. Trey Lance was recently traded to the Dallas Cowboys. Garoppolo discussed the deal’s pros and cons as well as what it means for the Cowboys, their starting quarterback Dak Prescott, and Lance.

“Excited for Trey. In an interview that will appear on NFL Total Access on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET, Garoppolo stated that this was simply a fresh chance for him. “Things didn’t work out in San Francisco for whatever reasons, but glad that he gets another shot, man. This league’s all about opportunities, and when you get a fresh one like that, you’ve just got to take advantage of it.

“Everyone has their own path and everything like that. It’s never going to be easy, but it’s how you come out the other end of it. So I’m always excited for him, man. He’s a brother of mine. Always pulling for him.”

Trey Lance, who is only 23 years old, still has a long future ahead of him and has plenty to learn from seasoned professionals. He can develop his talent with the Dallas Cowboys and maybe even receive the big break he’s been hoping for there.

However, Jimmy Garoppolo believes this young quarterback has what it takes to compete with Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush. Trey Lance still has plenty of time in his career to realize his goal of playing quarterback for an NFL team.

In the summer, Garoppolo agreed to a three-year, $67.5 million contract with the Raiders. In Week 1, Garoppolo will get the start for the squad and try to bring the Raiders back to prominence following their six-game winning season.

Garoppolo’s chances of exacting retribution on his previous team this season are slim. There will be no regular-season games between the 49ers and Raiders. They could only possibly cross paths during the Super Bowl.
