“Pretty Extreme”: Warriors Coach Steve Kerr Says Boston Fans’ Chants ‘Rattled’ Draymond Green a Little Bit

For Draymond Green, the NBA Finals wasn’t exactly a stroll in the park. He had intermittent difficulties throughout the series and endured some rather harsh jeers from Boston Celtics supporters. Draymond wasn’t happy when Warriors coach Steve Kerr controversially removed a struggling Draymond Green from Game 4 late in the fourth quarter, but he eventually came around.

The Boston audience routinely chanted foul words toward Green during the Warriors’ games against the Celtics at TD Garden. Draymond was the target of NSFW shouts from the Celtics supporters, which Kerr thinks went too far because there were kids there.

“I thought they crossed the line. I’m all for booing guys, cheering for your own team. The appropriate cheer — if you want to go down that path — is ‘so-and-so sucks, so-and-so sucks.’ … when they were saying ‘F you Draymond,’ 20,000 people, I thought of Draymond’s kid too,” Kerr told NBC Sports Bay Area.

“Like DJ, five years old, sweet kid, like the nicest kid … this sweet and innocent little guy, and he’s gotta sit there and watch as his dad gets cussed out by 20,000 drunk fans. People don’t think of it in those terms when you’re watching from the outside. I do think it rattled Draymond a little bit because that’s pretty extreme.”

In Game 1 of the Finals, the Celtics unquestionably outplayed Golden State physically, which enabled them to steal the victory there. To square the series 1-1, the Warriors came back in Game 2 with a lot more vigor. However, Green’s performance may have been hampered by the jeers as he only managed to average 6.2 points, 8.0 rebounds, 6.2 assists, and 1.7 steals per game. But all that truly matters to him is that he has the final laugh.
