Potential Candidates To Replace Aaron Boone As Yankees Manager
The New York Yankees made it to the ALCS, but with their decline in the second part of the regular season and their failure to even reach the World Series, let alone win it, it was still not a successful season for them. In a situation like this, the manager becomes the first person people raise their fingers at, and Aaron Boone is the one blamed.
The final out of an ALCS that was never as close as the scores portrayed came when Aaron Judge was retired on a ground ball back to the mound. This started the countdown. The Yankees were humiliated by the Astros, not only swept by them, leading Gerrit Cole to concede, “They beat us in every area.”

The Yankees have exhausted their equity with the fans who purchased tickets. It’s also likely that they will have to accept a 2023 team without Aaron Judge, as if that weren’t terrible enough.
There are many people to hold accountable, but their manager Aaron Boone deserves the most blame. After yet another poor finale to the Yankees’ season, Aaron Boone could very well be dismissed in the upcoming days or weeks.

Here are five possible managing successors for Aaron Boone, should he be fired-
1) Joe Girardi
If the Yankees replaced Aaron Boone with the person that Boone himself replaced, wouldn’t that be prophetic?
The Phillies dismissed Girardi in the middle of this season, and he is no longer in charge of the team. Since then, Rob Thomson, his bench coach and a former Yankees manager, has guided them to their first World Series appearance since the Yankees’ victory over the Phillies in 2009.

Although it doesn’t look good on Girardi, he is unquestionably superior to Boone. He offers the Yankees managerial experience and comfort, particularly if they remove Boone but keep the same front office.
The Yankees absolutely need a manager with some experience, and maybe Girardi would be the best candidate to return.
2) Luis Rojas
In November 2021, the Yankees signed Rojas to serve as their third base coach, bolstering the team’s bench with additional “experienced leadership.”

Despite certain shortcomings during his time as Mets manager in New York, Rojas was still well-liked by the team’s players and possessed the crucial “baseball DNA” since he is the half-brother of former player Moises Alou and the son of former MLB great Felipe Alou. In contrast to other occupations in baseball, Rojas was adept at handling the media, which is a significant aspect of the job in the Big Apple.
Rojas will be a good choice for the Yankees if they decide to keep him on staff.
3) Joe Maddon
After a significant losing streak, Joe Maddon was fired from his position as manager of the Angels this season. He still possesses the necessary skills to lead a group like the Yankees, though.
One of the oldest managers in the league would be Maddon, who turns 69 in February. However, his clubs have reached the postseason eight times in his 17 seasons as a manager. His teams averaged 92 wins a season and made it to the World Series twice from 2008 to 2019 (managing Tampa Bay and the Cubs), winning it in 2016 with the Cubs.

After Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani, the Angels had almost no talent on their rosters, which is probably why things didn’t work out with them.
4) Don Mattingly
Although Don Mattingly isn’t getting any younger, he may be even more familiar with New York and the Yankees than Joe Girardi among the possible managers.
From 1982 to 1995, Mattingly, who will turn 62 in April, played in the majors for the Yankees. Before joining Joe Torre and the Dodgers, he served as their head coach for them from 2004 to 2007. Before moving to Miami to manage the Marlins before the 2016 season, Mattingly succeeded Torre in 2011.
“He [Don Mattingly] was a great athlete and a great player. Some great athletes are not great human beings and vice versa. This man combined all of that.”

Given how little support he received in Miami, it was amazing that they made the playoffs in 2020, but in 2019, 2021, and 2022, they honestly struggled.
It’s unclear if he would desire to manage again because he left his position as the Marlins’ manager following this season. If so, he might be willing to rejoin the Yankees and work to help them win the World Series.
5) Mike Shildt
Of the five former managers on our list, Mike Shildt is the youngest, as he is 54 years old.
Shildt was the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals for parts of four seasons from 2018 through 2021. In his first full season managing the Cardinals in 2019, he won the NL Manager of the Year Award.
In each of his three full seasons with the Cardinals, the club made it to the playoffs, and Shildt received NL Manager of the Year Award votes. In addition to winning in 2019, he was a finalist in 2021.

However, after the 2021 season, the Cardinals fired Shildt due to “philosophical differences.” The Padres then hired him as a coach for the 2022 season.
He has expressed an interest in managing again, and he has the best track record of all of the managers on this list, despite being the youngest and the manager with the least amount of experience on this list.
