Post Jordan Montgomery’s ALCS Game 1 Win Are Yankees Re-thinking Their Decision?

Jordan Montgomery, the Texas Rangers’ starting pitcher, was largely responsible for the Texas Rangers’ narrow victory over the Houston Astros in Game 1 of the ALCS on Sunday night.

In game one of the series, Montgomery threw 6.1 shutout innings while giving up just five hits and one walk. From then, Texas’ bullpen seized control and finally won 2-0 at Minute Maid Park.

Montgomery is now the second pitcher in Rangers history to have multiple shutout outings of 6.0 or more innings during a playoff career, according to MLB.com’s Sarah Langs. Less than two weeks ago, the left-hander gave his first such performance.

After this terrible season, it is simple to forget that the Yankees were really in the ALCS the previous year. They managed nine runs on a.162 average over four games, but Houston swept them. They concluded from that offensive no-show that they required a backup pitcher for Gerrit Cole, who they thought would be able to defeat the Astros in October.

They spent $162 million over six years on Carlos Rodon, who in Season 1’s play, health, and acting contributed to the Yankees’ failure to advance to another matchup with the Astros.

However, Montgomery made his debut with the Yankees in 2017 and played for them until they sent him to the Cardinals in 2021, just as St. Louis was on a run to the postseason.

Montgomery has a 22-20 record with the Yankees and a 3.94 ERA in one playoff game for New York in 2020.

The Cardinals are really the second team that is considering chasing Montgomery, it turns out. At the August trade deadline, the Cardinals acquired him, reliever Chris Stratton, infielder Thomas Saggese, pitcher Tekoah Roby, and reliever John King.

Meanwhile, Yankees supporters will hope the team is making use of the offseason to comprehend:

Why did they not use Eovaldi and Montgomery to the fullest extent possible while they had them on staff?

The Rangers are currently 6-0 in the postseason despite never having won the World Series. On Monday, the Astros will attempt to tie the ALCS after losing the World Series opener last year but still winning the championship.

The New York Yankees will enter the free-agent market this winter seeking reinforcements for their starting rotation. They could also be hoping to reunite with a former starter whose value has risen this playoffs.

The Yankees are one of two clubs interested in signing Texas Rangers left-hander Jordan Montgomery after the current campaign, according to USA Today.
