Paul Finebaum’s Opinion About Nick Saban Has Everyone Shocked

When you have a CV as stellar and impressive as Nick Saban’s, the head coach of the Alabama football team, your position at the top is usually unquestionable. The Crimson Tide, though, have recently shown themselves to be vulnerable and shockingly missed out on the College Football Playoff last season. Georgia, its adversary, has also put together a potential dynasty of its own. On Monday, ESPN’s Paul Finebaum said something shocking about Nick Saban, the head coach of Alabama.

Paul Finebaum’s Opinion About Nick Saban Has Everyone Shocked

When asked if Saban’s legacy at Alabama may be evaluated differently if his team again fails to make the College Football Playoff this year, Finebaum actually responded in the affirmative.

Kirby Smart, the head coach of Georgia, is aiming for a three-peat, a feat that not even Nick Saban has managed to accomplish in his illustrious career. Should they defend their championship this coming season, the Bulldogs would be in the race for the most dominating program in college football history. Finebaum is of the opinion that the Bama coach cannot escape responsibility for the underwhelming result of the previous campaign.

“I think you have to,” Finebaum said. “Nothing is going to take away from what he has accomplished and for those who don’t follow this closely, he’s won six national championships at Alabama since arriving in 2007. He won another one at LSU but if he is in the same league as somebody who has now at the end of the season won three (Kirby Smart), then that’s a big hit on his legacy and you’ll have to question Saban for what happened last year.”

Despite Finebaum’s declaration that he didn’t want to diminish Saban’s seven national titles, the renowned college football pundit thinks that last year’s failure to win a championship was a mark against Saban’s legacy, particularly given that he had two of the first three selections in the 2023 NFL draft.

Fans of college football were horrified by these remarks.

“Saban’s legacy isn’t going anywhere. Get that mess outta here. Tom Brady has fallen short of the Super Bowl many times, but those years won’t be remembered as vividly as the 7 rings he won,” another tweet read.

“Seven national championships, 10 SEC championships, and 274 wins. Not to mention Alabama was in the national championship just a few ago and just finished a “down year” with a 10-2 record. I guess it’s a slow news day at ESPN.”
