Patrick Mahomes’ Father Once Picked Travis Kelce Up From A Low Point: Helped Him Score Touchdowns

During the 2022 season, Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce earned their second Super Bowl triumph in four years. The quarterback and tight end have developed into one of the league’s top offensive pairings, and their remarkable connection and camaraderie allowed them to reach the pinnacle. Surprisingly, Patrick Mahomes Sr. was the catalyst for their enduring bond.

Patrick Mahomes’ Father Once Picked Travis Kelce Up From A Low Point: Helped Him Score Touchdowns

Mahomes recently shared a tale about how his father had helped Travis out of a tough spot a few years prior on the New Heights podcast, which is hosted by Jason Kelce and Travis Kelce.

He was referring to a period when Kelce was far less prominent and current Miami Dolphins player Tyreek Hill was the Chiefs’ main receiver. He was obviously dejected about the circumstance.

“If you look at our relationship now, you would be like ‘That is crazy!’ but my dad tells this great story,” the quarterback started.

Travis is a team guy, so he’s all pumped up in the locker room since we won the game.

“But we go to the family area and Travis gets out there first and he was going to see his family. You could just tell that Travis was kind of down. Not down, but like ‘Man, I could have played better’.

“But my dad, Silky P, went over there and grabbed Travis and said ‘Hey, he’s going to throw it to everybody so just know your time is coming’.

“The next game, we play the Steelers, and Travis has 140 yards and two touchdowns. My dad said he grabbed him after and was like ‘I told you’.”

The two discussed their jobs and the beginning of their bromance in great detail on the podcast. The couple’s meet-cute tale was ultimately disclosed on the show, and the elements are familiar to most individuals in their twenties.

Mahomes shared, “You’d have like a little off-time [afterward]. Well, you know Coach Reid would always give you the walk-through the day before the actual walk-through and me being a kid fresh out of college, I had a couple buddies that were rookies with me and they’re like — ‘Let’s go out, it’s Saturday, man. We’ll have the walk-through on Sunday, just got back from [training camp], we had a great preseason.”

“So we go out. I set eight alarms on my phone [before] I go out with the rookies [and] of course, I go out there and I see the old Travis Kelce out at the same spot I’m at and Trav’s like — ‘Come on! All y’all come over here to [my] table, let’s have a great time.’ So I have a great night [with Kelce], get home, have all my alarms set I made sure of that. Go to sleep, wake up — not to an alarm — I wake up, look at the T.V. and I see 8:15 [a.m.] on my T.V. screen. I didn’t put my phone in the charger so my phone died.”

This was a classic drunken mistake. The two friends’ mutual rescue from their coach’s fury the next day was the beginning of an enduring relationship.
