Panathinaikos’ Coach Ergin Ataman Is Searching For Two More Players To Boost Its Roster

Panathinaikos defeated Baskonia 95-81 in this year’s EuroLeague Round 5, moving on to a 2-3 record at the beginning of the 2023–24 Regular Season. The Turkish head coach Ergin Ataman discussed a number of subjects with the media following the game.

Panathinaikos’ Coach Ergin Ataman Is Searching For Two More Players To Boost Its Roster

In light of Ioannis Papapetrou’s left knee surgery, PAO head coach Ergin Ataman spoke to the media after the game about the urgent need for reinforcements.

This implies that in 2023 the Greek forward will be unable to return to action. It is expected that he will resume his activities in the early months of 2024.

“There is a reality that we need two players. We are searching on the market,” he continued. “We need one small forward, and we need one more ball handler to help Kostas Sloukas in the 1-2 positions. This is our reality. Right now, we are on the market, we are searching.

“This is a new team. We will make adjustments with some new players. Maybe we needed one player, but after the surgery of Papapetrou, we needed two players to have a balance. I cannot play with Juancho Hernangomez on the three [small forward position]. First, he must understand how to play in his role [power forward position] well at this level.”

He mentioned, for instance, that his team is still available. “[Ioannis] Papapetrou’s injury has upset me because last year he played the whole year in Partizan and in the World Cup. The truth is we need two players and we are looking at the market, that is the reality. We want a 3 and a guard to help [Kostas] Sloukas in the 1-2. I don’t know if we will get them both but those are our needs. Our president agrees with this, but is difficult to add somebody at the moment”, Ataman said in the press conference.”
