The NCAA modified its policy on July 2, 2021, permitting its athletes to receive compensation for their name, likeness, and image (NIL). With five million followers on Instagram and TikTok combined at the time of the rule change, Dunne had a larger social media following than any other collegiate athlete, making her expected to earn more than any other athlete.

Dunne made her signing with WME Sports public in August, marking the company’s first NIL player. She revealed her first exclusive brand deal with activewear company Vuori a month later.

When LSU hosted its first meet of the season at Utah on January 6, 2023, a sizable crowd turned out to cheer on Dunne. There have been reports that some of these fans harassed journalists, members of the gymnastics teams, and other spectators during and after the competition.
