Ole Miss visits Georgia in battle of SEC cellar dwellers
Georgia and visiting Ole Miss will be looking to end losing streaks that have them mired at the bottom of the Southeastern Conference standings when they meet Saturday afternoon in Athens, Ga.
Ole Miss (12-14, 3-10 SEC) lost its fourth straight game Tuesday when South Carolina’s James Reese V sank a halfcourt bank shot as time expired to make the difference in a 77-74 decision.
Georgia (6-20, 1-12) is in a much greater slump after being pummeled 84-65 at LSU on Wednesday. It was the Bulldogs’ sixth straight loss and their 14th in 15 contests.
“Truthfully and truly, all I’m focused on is the daily process of trying to make this team get better,” Georgia coach Tom Crean said. “We missed some shots that we normally make. We missed some opportunities… Our guard play wasn’t what it needed to be and we missed some chances in the post. That’s all, we just have to do a better job there.”
Ole Miss led South Carolina by as many as eight points in the second half before the advantage evaporated. The Rebels needed Jarkel Joiner’s layup with 1.7 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime, when the lead changed hands five times.
“It hurts,” said Ole Miss coach Kermit Davis, whose team has lost nine of its last 12 games. “There’s not much you can say in the locker room when a guy makes a halfcourt shot. We’re going to take tomorrow off and concentrate on academics and do all the rehab you can do and have the best day you can possibly have tomorrow … then get ready for Georgia. It’s all you can do.”
Nysier Brooks, Matthew Murrell and Joiner each scored 18 points for Ole Miss, while Luis Rodriguez added eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Joiner averages a team-high 14.6 points, while Brooks contributes a team-high 7.8 rebounds and 1.2 blocks to go along with 9.8 points.
Georgia lost control of the game early against LSU, which used a 17-0 run to take a 38-22 lead at halftime. The Tigers led by as many as 32 points in the second half against the Bulldogs, who committed 26 turnovers that the Tigers converted into 31 points. Georgia was also outscored 52-20 in the paint.
Kario Oquendo, who averages a team-high 14.4 points, scored a game-high 26 as Georgia’s only player in double figures.
