Now That Yankees Star Aaron Judge Is Placed On Injury List, Other Players Are Under Pressure To Perform

Aaron Judge’s catch through the right-field wall during the Yankees’ three-game series against the Dodgers in Los Angeles last weekend stands out among the many events that took place.

Now That Yankees Star Aaron Judge Is Placed On Injury List, Other Players Are Under Pressure To Perform

In the eighth inning of New York’s 6-3 victory on Saturday, J.D. Martinez crushed a pitch for a certain extra-base hit off of Michael King. The Dodgers could have had a huge inning coming, but the defending AL MVP raced down the liner and snagged the ball before smashing through the chain link fence and into the bullpen.

There is no fracture, according to manager Aaron Boone, and there is no set date for Judge’s return to the lineup. Judge was given a platelet rich plasma injection and has an official diagnosis of ligament sprain and contusion. The AL MVP for 2022 is spending his second season on the IL at this time.

Judge, 31, was placed on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday night due to a toe bruise and toe ligament strain. The Yankees have lost him to injury twice already this year. Additionally sidelined from April 28 to May 8 due to an injured right hip, the 6-foot-7, 282-pound slugger.

No player, in my opinion, is more essential to the success of any team than Judge. Even though Judge is fit and active, the club often follows his lead: if he doesn’t hit or score runs, the offense frequently sputters as a result. With him on the lineup, that is.

So now is the time to remember that the Yankees were 10 games over.500, in the third of the three AL wild card slots, and 7 1/2 games behind the first-place Rays on Wednesday, when Judge formally started his second disabled list stint of the season. When he resumes his activities, where will they be?

The Yankees called up Billy McKinney to fill Judge’s spot on the roster, and it shouldn’t come as a surprise if he is among as many left-handed hitters in the lineup as possible for the opening game of a doubleheader on Thursday against Lance Lynn of the White Sox, who has allowed a 1.097 OPS to left-handed hitters this season (Judge by himself is at 1.078).

But ultimately, the Yankees will need their expensive players to make up for Judge’s absence. LeMahieu, who was formerly used as a gauge for the Yankees’ offensive prowess, has a high strikeout rate and a low impact rate. The previous time, Judge and Josh Donaldson and Giancarlo Stanton were both on the IL at the same time. They are now engaged.

Boone has put a lot of trust in the idea that Donaldson still has power in his bat, and since coming back from the IL, he has hit three home runs in only 13 at-bats. When on a roll, Stanton can mimic Judge’s exit velocity and output.

After a fantastic start, Anthony Rizzo had a 6-for-34 line with 12 strikeouts in his final nine games without an extra-base hit. The offensively inconsistent Gleyber Torres has gone 0-for-12 after a 12-game hitting run.

Judge had a platelet-rich plasma injection in his toe on Tuesday night, which was meant to hasten the healing process but left him “pretty sore” the next day, according to Boone.

Till the swelling goes down, the team won’t know much more.

“Think about getting a shot in your big toe — you got to get over that,” the manager said after the Yankees-White Sox game in The Bronx was postponed due to air quality concerns. “Then we’ll see where we’re at.”
