Nottingham Panthers Player Adam Johnson Dies As His Neck Gets Slashed During A Game

The hockey community is in sorrow following the terrible death of American player Adam Johnson, who was pursuing his career with the Nottingham Panthers in the UK, in a catastrophic on-ice incident. The event happened during a game between the 29-year-old Minnesota native and the Sheffield Steelers at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena. The player was formerly a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

As stated by the Telegraph, in the second period of play, Matt Petgrave of the Sheffield Steelers struck Johnson in the neck. Petgrave seemed to lose his balance following a previous incident on the ice. Horrified spectators at the Utilita Arena saw Johnson’s blood dripping down his shirt.

Players formed a ring around Johnson while medical attention was given on the ice, and protective screens were erected when the game was halted. Before the 8,000-person crowd left Sheffield Arena, the players went back to their locker rooms.

Johnson was brought to Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, but there was no chance of recovery.

The morning following the catastrophe, the crew declared Johnson dead.

“Adam, our number 47, was not only an outstanding ice hockey player, but also a great teammate and an incredible person with his whole life ahead of him,” the Panthers said in a statement. “The Club will dearly miss him and will never forget him.”

The Panthers declared on X that about 8,000 spectators at Utilita Arena Sheffield had been “asked to leave the building due to a major medical emergency.”

“The Panthers would like to send our thoughts and condolences to Adam’s family, his partner and all his friends at this extremely difficult time,” the team added. “Everyone at the club including players, staff, management, and ownership are heartbroken at the news of Adam’s passing.

“Our thoughts are also with the fans and staff of both clubs, especially those who attended or were following the game, who will be devastated following today’s news.”

In order to compete in the Elite Ice Hockey League, which features teams all around Great Britain, Johnson joined the Panthers this summer.

of 13 games throughout the 2018–19 and 2019–20 seasons, Johnson scored a goal and four points while playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League.

Before moving to Nottingham, he previously played for the Augsburger Panther of Germany, the Ontario Reign of Canada, and the Malmo Redhawks of Sweden.
