The Old Dominion men struggled to recover from their shocking defeat to Coastal Carolina on Thursday, while the Monarch women managed to hold off a spirited Marshall squad at home. When Norfolk State’s basketball team played Howard on Saturday, they had won 19 straight home games. Before a humiliating, heartbreaking sequence lost them a victory in the dying seconds, it would be 20.

With 1.2 seconds left, Joe Bryant sank a basket to give NSU an 84-83 lead. However, the Spartans were assessed a technical foul because players stepped off the bench and onto the court to celebrate. The Bison stunned Norfolk St. 86-84 by making three of their four free throw attempts.

Norfolk loses against Howard after receiving technical foul

The Spartans were down one with 5.3 seconds left in the contest, 83-82. The final possession was given to Joe Bryant Jr. after they inbounded from the sidelines. He did it with elegance. Bryant’s finish via touch kissed the glass and was successful. With 1.4 seconds remaining, Norfolk State had a one-point advantage.

Although the Bison would eventually acquire another item, it was ultimately unimportant. Bryant’s layup was successful, and the Spartans’ bench erupted in jubilation. Players flooded onto the court. Naturally, that is not permitted. Norfolk State assessed a technical foul for rushing onto the court. With 23 points, Joe Bryant Jr. led the Spartans (12-6, 2-1).

Caheim Brown: 19 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists. With 16 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks, Kris Bankston contributed. The next game for both teams is on Monday at home for Howard against Morehouse and Saturday at Coppin State for Norfolk State.
