Nikola Jokic Spends His Time Scouting Horses Sitting Next To Jamal Murray

Over the past few years, Nikola Jokic has solidified his status as the NBA’s best player. This accomplishment is all the more remarkable in light of the copious amounts of evidence indicating he doesn’t even enjoy the game of basketball, including a hilarious video that was taken shortly after he joined the Nuggets for training camp.

Jokic led Denver to its first-ever title last season, and while he seemed to enjoy the accompanying parade, he was initially a little miffed that the celebrations were keeping him from returning to Serbia. Jokic definitely should have earned his third consecutive MVP award.

Jokic explained earlier this month that 2023 has been his most successful year for his horse stable. “We grew. We grew. My horses are everywhere – I have them in France, Italy, Serbia. They’re all winning races, so I’m happy,” revealed the Nuggets’ center. “I love it [horse racing]. It’s my passion. It puts me outside of this thing [basketball].”

This week during Nuggets practice, Jokic was glued to his phone, and teammate Jamal Murray asked him questions about specifics.

“I am scouting horses,” Jokic said.

When Murray asked Jokic how many horses he had, the Serbian who was raised around horse stables and horse races nearly lost count.

“Right now, like seven, eight, 10, 12,” Jokic said.

Jokic’s distinct viewpoint has taken centre stage ever since he helped the Nuggets win an NBA title in June.

As expected by fans, the NBA Finals MVP made no mention of excessive or ostentatious celebrations in the postgame interview that followed the team’s decisive victory against the Heat.

“The job is done, we can go home now,” Jokic said.

Jokic joked that he would ask Josh Kroenke, the president of the Nuggets, to give him the team jet since he was so worried about getting back to Serbia in time following the celebration in Denver.

Jokic returned to his homeland of Serbia less than a week after winning the NBA championship to attend horse racing.

The large man does have a somewhat dry sense of humour, so while it’s possible that despite being one of the world’s most dominant players, he’s just really committed to the idea that he doesn’t enjoy basketball, it’s obvious he would much rather spend his time taking care of the sizable stable of racehorses he has amassed and dancing at nightclubs in his native country.

On October 24, the Nuggets will play their official season opener against the Lakers. There’s no reason to think Jokic won’t continue where he left off when the new campaign begins.
