In his senior year, he averaged 21 points, 11 rebounds, and 4 assists per game, earning him a spot on the South Carolina High School League All-State team. He committed to the University of Georgia, where he played two seasons of college basketball.

In his sophomore year, Claxton took a huge leap, emerging as one of the best players in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and one of the top prospects in the 2019 NBA Draft.
