NFL: Turns Out Footballs Do Have Chips Inside For Calculating Accurate Results

The Cincinnati Bengals’ 98-yard fumble return by Sam Hubbard, which came after Bengals linebacker Logan Wilson stripped Tyler Huntley of the ball as the Ravens quarterback was stretching for the game-winning touchdown, wasn’t the only reason the NFL world was buzzing during Sunday night’s game between the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals. No, something was made public by one of the NFL’s Twitter accounts.

NFL: Turns Out Footballs Do Have Chips Inside For Calculating Accurate Results

Football fans have long complained about how difficult it is to spot balls. Despite the authorities’ best efforts to position themselves optimally, spotting the ball frequently relies on the officials’ visual inspection. When the chains are brought out to measure first downs, that becomes much more annoying.

Fans of football have long questioned. Why won’t the league implement chips, which would make correctly identifying the ball much simpler?

In detailing the play, Next Gen Stats — which identifies itself on Twitter as “The official account of @NFL Next Gen Stats” — revealed something else.

The football has a chip in it. NFL placed it!

In the early stages of the fourth quarter of Sunday’s AFC Wild Card weekend, the Ravens lined up on third-and-goal. Tyler “Snoop” Huntley attempted to go up-and-over the goal line like Trevor Lawrence did on Saturday by running a quarterback sneak.

Short of the end zone, the ball was knocked loose.

How near came Tyler Huntley to attempting to use the football to cross the plane? The tweet stated that the ball’s closest proximity to the end zone was 0.6 yards from the goal line, according to the football’s chip.

The tweet’s main goal was probably to demonstrate that Huntley was within two feet away from a potential winning touchdown. However, a lot of people focused on something else. Evidently, the football has a chip in it.

That sparked a lot of discussion.

“According to the WHAT?” another fan asked, using a photo of a measurement from a game between the Dallas Cowboys and the then Oakland Raiders that included an index card.
