NFL Trade Rumors: Washington Commanders To Trade DE Chase Young

Chase Young, a defensive end with the Washington Commanders, is one of the players whose future is most uncertain.

Young’s future with Washington is in doubt after the Commanders declined his fifth-year option this summer.

In his debut season as a pro, Young racked up 7.5 sacks, 44 tackles, and three forced fumbles after being selected second overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, behind Joe Burrow. In 2021, after playing in only 11 games the previous two seasons, he tore his ACL. He has made 26 tackles and 1.5 sacks over that time.

With Young, the Commanders may choose several different paths. Washington has two options: they can trade him before or during the season to receive some value back for the former No. 2 selection, or they can let him play out the last year of his rookie contract and then decide what to do in the offseason.

According to Jeff Hartman of Behind the Steel Curtain, the Pittsburgh Steelers are allegedly interested in Washington Commanders defensive end Chase Young and are searching for methods to sign the former second-overall choice.

Young’s fifth-year option was rejected by the Commanders, sparking rumors that he would be traded before his contract ends. If he becomes available, the Steelers would be “strongly interested.”

“Though [Albert] Breer wrote that Washington is “unlikely” to trade Young, general manager Martin Mayhew may want to consider a second-round pick in exchange for the oft-injured defensive end,” Bleacher Report writes. “With several high-end defensive ends available on the free-agent market, the Commanders may be able to replace Young and his $11 million contract with a less costly veteran on a one-year deal.”

Young has plenty to demonstrate. Before he can expect to receive a sizable paycheck from the Commanders or somewhere else in 2024, he must first stay healthy for the entire 17-game season.

The Kansas City Chiefs may be a good fit for the former first-round choice.

Toney, a previous first-round selection in 2021, was acquired by the Chiefs from the Giants in October of last year in exchange for two additional picks. In addition to other issues, Toney left New York because of his lingering injuries.

Young has similar injury-related concerns, so this would be the ideal time for Veach to negotiate a contract.

The salary cap is the Chiefs’ main deterrent to dealing for Young. Young will have a guaranteed salary of $5.3 million from any team that trades for him, and the organization has less than $1 million in cap space. There are other options for Kansas City to free up salary cap room besides just extending one player to sign another.

Let’s see if Young lands in Steelers, Chiefs or all together into a different team!
