NFL Rumors: Raiders To Trade Wide Receiver Davante Adams?

The Green Bay Packers’ transfer of Davante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders last year was one of the most bombshell trades of the entire 2022 NFL offseason. His name is back in the trade speculations after just one season with his current squad.

NFL Rumors: Raiders To Trade Wide Receiver Davante Adams ?

Let’s not overlook June 1, though. Adams may theoretically be traded by the Raiders after June 1 as long as the cap charge is kept to a maximum of $7.85 million this year and $23.6 million in 2024. He may also be moved after June 1, 2024, which would reduce the maximum charge to $7.85 million once more and push the $15.7 million to 2025.

Adams will make a reasonable $6.03 million in salary in 2023 and has already been given a $20 million roster bonus. If Adams’s agitation is sufficient to convince the Raiders to make a change, they may do so in 2024 with a bigger (but still manageable) cap penalty.

The entire cap charges of $31.4 million have already been paid using the money that makes up those charges. It is gone. These cap will count against the Raiders’ cap, sooner or later.

Acording to NFL insider Mike Florio:

“A trade is not an impossibility. The cap consequence is manageable, and the current cap charge is unavoidable. The biggest impediment to doing a deal could be the total investment made for what would be one year with Adams.

“The Raiders have paid him $42.75 million. They gave up a first-round pick and a second-round pick to get him. They would need a significant haul to justify what was surrendered for a single 17-game, no-playoffs season. If they should get one, maybe they would take it.”

Davante Adams put together a strong statistical season in Las Vegas, but it failed to help them return to the NFL playoffs after getting there a year ago. The disastrous campaign for the Raiders resulted in the team moving on from Derek Carr and replacing him with Jimmy Garoppolo.

So where would he go, if traded?

Adams has lately gained attention for his criticism of the Raiders’ executive management, which he feels is moving toward rebuilding rather than making progress toward constructing a competing group. Many people thought Adams may be transferred shortly as a result of the front office’s criticism, however in a recent Vic Talfu Raiders mailbag in The Athletic, the theory was debunked due to contractual reasons.

“Adams has a dead cap hit of $31.4 million if traded this year and $23.6 million if traded next year, so that’s not in the cards right now,” Talfu wrote.

Talfu said that it is doubtful the Raiders’ standout receiver will still be a Raider at the end of his current deal even though a trade is not currently in the process.

“Adams, 30, doesn’t have time for a rebuild,” he wrote. “He signed a five-year contract last year but knows he won’t be around in 2025 when the salary cap hit spikes to $44 million.”

Adams is waiting to see whether the Raiders’ coaching staff can put together a real winner while he is still in the prime of his career after taking multiple shots at the front office.
