NFL news: Detroit Lions LB Jason Cabinda receives high praise after being named NFL Community MVP for Week 7
Jason Cabinda, the 2021 Walter Payton Man of the Year for the Detroit Lions, has been named the NFLPA Community MVP for Week 7 for his efforts in the local school systems.
“It’s an incredible pleasure to be named NFLPA Community MVP!” In a statement to the NFLPA, Cabinda said. “I take tremendous satisfaction in my efforts to support youngsters and do my best to inspire them,” Cabinda said.
Cabinda has already visited six schools this year, including two during the Week 6 Lions bye week, with a focus on teaching students through STEM and literacy initiatives. In his upcoming event, Cabinda will connect virtually with more than 100 schools in the Detroit area, offering students the chance to ask him questions and enter to win prizes like Detroit Lions tickets.

“I really think that a village is needed to raise a child, and I want to demonstrate to the young people of Detroit that the Detroit Lions organization is that community. By giving them the tools, opportunities, and inspiration they require to succeed, we hope to see them reach tremendous heights in life.”
Each week, the NFLPA honors a new Community MVP, recognizing players who go above and beyond for their local communities. The NFLPA contributes $10,000 to the player’s preferred charity or foundation as part of the weekly award.

Dan Campbell, the coach, described Cabinda as “the kind of guy who can change the world” on Friday. He is heart and soul. He is incredibly dependable and puts his time, effort, and money where his mouth is. And he is someone who will help someone improve himself and pave a better path if he can. He does it out of genuine concern rather than for attention. When you surround yourself with good people, good things do occur, and they do so for the right reasons.
Cabinda, who agreed to a two-year contract with the Lions in February, is now recovering from an ankle injury while on the reserve/PUP list. The Lions are optimistic that they can get him back on the field shortly.
