NFL Insider: Two Teams Interested In Offering Jim Harbaugh A Coaching Job

If Jim Harbaugh joins the NFL this summer, he might not be able to escape the fallout or fines from Michigan’s purported sign-stealing incident. However, according to The Athletic, at least two NFL teams are already showing interest in the former 49ers head coach.

NFL Insider: Two Teams Interested In Offering Jim Harbaugh Coaching Job

This week, Dianna Russini of Fox Sports claimed that the Bears and Panthers are among the clubs that might have head coaching vacancies come 2024 summer and that Harbaugh is “absolutely” a target for them.

“(Panthers owner David) Tepper and Harbaugh had conversations last year,” she said. “It obviously didn’t pan out, but this was something that they discussed. … That’s a name I’m hearing again. The Chicago Bears are another organization … (that has) had some conversations about that, depending on what decision they  make with this coaching staff that is in place.”

Additionally, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Harbaugh’s name has “percolated” across the NFL and “this might be the year” that he returns. Harbaugh coached the 49ers for four seasons, from 2011 to 2014, during his final NFL tenure.

Frank Reich, the previous coach of the Panthers, was fired this past week after just 11 games on the job, despite leading Carolina to an NFL-worst 1-10 record. Reich was the third full-time head coach dismissed in the David Tepper era, which started in ’18. Reich was fired by the Colts last year and failed to get the most out of the Panthers’ youthful offense in 2023.

The 59-year-old Harbaugh has been suspended twice already this year by Michigan for suspected NCAA infractions, but he has enjoyed success in the NFL and in college coaching, finishing 44-19-1 as the 49ers coach from 2011 to 2014 and 83-25 in nine seasons with the Wolverines. In recent years, he has made references to a potential NFL comeback, allegedly discussing open positions with the Broncos and Vikings.

Did Harbaugh play in the NFL?

Indeed, Harbaugh was an NFL player. The Bears selected him 26th overall in the 1987 draft, and he went on to have a 14-year career. Over those 14 seasons, Harbaugh made 140 starts with four different clubs.
