NFL Hall of Fame Bill Cowher Calls Colts’ Jeff Saturday hiring ‘A Disgrace To The Coaching Profession’

The Indianapolis Colts sacked Frank Reich last week and replaced him with Jeff Saturday as interim head coach. Most people were shocked by the choice given that Saturday has no experience as a head coach in the NFL or even in a collegiate setting.

Many people have publicly voiced their displeasure with Irsay’s choice in appointing Saturday as head coach as well as their displeasure that the former Colt took the position.

Bill Cowher, a former NFL head coach and future Hall of Famer, is the most well-known NFL player to recently speak openly about the hire. The legendary Steelers player was criticized on Saturday for previously declining a position with the Colts and questioned why things have changed.

In an emotional statement on Sunday morning, former NFL player and coach Bill Cowher called it a “travesty,” and we discovered that top Colts executives weren’t even in favor of the decision.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport claim that a number of top Colts executives, including general manager Chris Ballard and Pete Ward, attempted to persuade owner Jim Irsay not to hire Saturday but were unsuccessful. They claimed that Irsay would only consider hiring someone with coaching experience above a Georgia Catholic high school.

“I am speaking on behalf of the coaching profession. I know for a fact that Jeff Saturday was offered an opportunity to become an assistant coach with the Indianapolis Colts multiple times within the past four years,” Bill Cowher said Sunday. “He declined, citing he had a TV job and wanted to spend more time with family. I get it. Coaching is about commitment and sacrifice. It’s not just a job. It is a lifestyle. That being said, Jeff Saturday has taken the position this year as a consultant for the Colts, and he’s talked to them weekly form his home in Atlanta.”

Cowher thinks it is disrespectful to say that the other Colts coaches, who have supported them throughout the entire season, are deserving of the job over Saturday.
