NFL Fans React to Alleged Threat from Urban Meyer Towards Jaguars Player

Another embarrassing anecdote has emerged from Urban Meyer’s regrettable NFL tenure.

Andrew Wingard Recounts Tense Meeting After Loss to Seahawks

Jacksonville Jaguars safety Andrew “Dewey” Wingard relayed a story from the 2021 season to Tyler Dunne. Following a 31-7 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, the defense held a meeting to discuss the team’s 1-6 start.

Meyer’s Fiery Reaction to Being Called a “Rookie Head Coach”

Wingard said the defense needed to help out the team’s rookie quarterback (Trevor Lawrence) and rookie head coach. While Meyer had a decorated college career, it was his first season as an NFL head coach. An incensed Meyer nevertheless called Wingard and threatened to kick him off the team for stating a fact.

“He says, ‘Dewey, why the hell did you call me a rookie head coach? Tell me why. If it was anybody else right now, you’d already be cut,'” Wingard recalled. “Explain yourself to me is essentially what he said. So I had to freaking save face and tell him how much I love him and how he’s the greatest coach ever.” Wingard apologized and “told Meyer everything he wanted to hear” the next day.

Concerns Rise Over Meyer’s Leadership Abilities

Observers lamented yet another tale that portrays Meyer as an unfit leader. “Urban Meyer is a primary example of the dangers of sportswashing,” USA Today’s Doug Farrar declared. “Dude got to portray himself as a veritable saint with so many willing stenographers for so many years.” It’s not the only absurd event from Meyer’s brief time in Jacksonville.

Other Troubling Incidents During Meyer’s Tenure

Kicker Josh Lamb said Meyer kicked him in the leg during warmups. The coach also benched James Robinson until Lawrence publicly pleaded for the running back to get more playing time. Before the nightmare season even began, Meyer faced his first NFL controversy when hiring Chris Doyle. The former Iowa strength coach promptly resigned following backlash from allegations of him making racist remarks and bullying players. The Jaguars fired Meyer before concluding his rookie season. They improved from 3-14 to 9-8 and won the AFC South behind Doug Pederson.
