The NFL has announced significant revisions to its personal conduct code, including a new provision that would allow them to penalise players for actions they took before joining the league.

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, one adjustment comes especially as a result of the shenanigans that Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown displayed on his way out of the league.

In Brown’s instance, it’s because of what he did before joining the New England Patriots as a free agent when he was switching from the Las Vegas Raiders to the Pats.

Although Brown was facing a rape and sexual assault lawsuit at the time, he did not tell the Patriots about it before joining. One week after signing, the Patriots dismissed him after they learned about him.

Players will be required to divulge all information regarding incidents or similar situations under the new regulations.

Brown’s shenanigans before joining the New England Patriots are mentioned in Florio’s story, along with the Deshaun Watson issue. The precise event that Florio is focusing on happened between the time that Brown was cut by the Raiders and the time that he signed with the Patriots.

According to Florio, a league source stated “the revisions did indeed result from the Brown case ‘and a few others. one change results in part from receiver Antonio Brown’s brief stay with the Patriots in 2019.”

After leaving the Patriots, Brown signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but his stint with the organization came to an abrupt end when he walked off the field in the middle of a game. Since then, he hasn’t appeared for an NFL franchise.

“All players must now disclose any potential violations to teams before signing contracts with them, per the Personal Conduct Policy.”

With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Brown’s final NFL team, he won a Super Bowl.
