NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Signed A 3 Year Contract Extension, Shows Spike In Net Worth

Roger Goodell, the commissioner of the NFL, is not going away.

As of March 2027, Goodell, 64, has held the position for six years. The league’s pay committee announced on Wednesday that he had been granted a three-year contract extension through that date.

“It really was quite simple, honestly,” Goodell said of the process involved for the extension. “It was just a matter of getting to it, frankly. It wasn’t much of a discussion. It was pretty quick.

“I’m obviously honored to do this job.”

The Associated Press was informed by a person with knowledge of the negotiations that Goodell’s contract had provisions for succession or extension. The individual talked to the AP under the condition of anonymity since no information was made public.

The specific financials of Goodell’s new deal were not made public right away. It is claimed that Goodell made $63.9 million in revenue in the 2019–20 and 2020–21 seasons.

Although the specifics of Goodell’s new contract are unknown, it is anticipated to be rich in incentives and the highest-paid agreement ever granted to a commissioner in any sport, given the league’s financial success.

“From my standpoint, there’s still a number of things that we want to do as a league,” Goodell said of his key priorities heading into his new deal. “It’s not my agenda. When we talked about a long-range plan [with owners], we talked about, ‘this is your long-range plan.’

“Listen, there are a lot of challenges out there, but there are also a lot of opportunities for us. We’re focused on how we make the NFL better every day, how we become a global sport. I think some very exciting things are happening in that context. I feel really good about where the National Football League is today, but we don’t sit around and tell ourselves that. We really focus on the things that we need to do.”

Since taking over for Paul Tagliabue as commissioner in 2006, Goodell, 64, has held the position. In 1982, he started working for the NFL as an administrative intern under Commissioner Pete Rozelle.

The NFL has seen a sharp increase in both money and popularity under Goodell’s direction. Earlier this year, the Washington Commanders were sold for a record $6.05 billion.

Along with facing harsh scrutiny and criticism, Goodell has also had to deal with the league’s handling of player-related off-field incidents, including as domestic abuse, and Colin Kaepernick’s initial decision to protest social justice by kneeling during the playing of the national anthem.

In order to carry out the league’s “long-range plan,” which involves turning into a worldwide sport, Goodell insisted that the new agreement won’t alter the way he does his duties. In the form of flag football, American football is scheduled to compete in the 2028 Olympics.

Goodell has contributed to the completion of a collective bargaining agreement that has resulted in ongoing labor peace and new media rights agreements worth over $100 billion with CBS, NBC, Fox, ESPN, and Amazon, making the NFL the envy of rival leagues. This has happened since his last extension.
