New York Mets Appear Wise To Have Refrained From Pursuing Juan Soto The Cost Of Their Best Prospects

Although it was always considered a long shot, the New York Mets were intrigued in Juan Soto. Now, the Mets appear wise to have refrained from pursuing a Juan Soto deal with the Nationals.

Not that Soto, who indisputably ranks among the top five hitters in baseball, is having a horrible season. Contrary to some overblown early criticism, his 161 OPS + is four points higher than his historical average.

The Mets estimate that they would have had to give up five or six elite players: undoubtedly Alvarez, very possibly Baty, Mauricio, and Alex Ramirez, as well as one or two of their top-10 pitching prospects from Dominic Hamel, Mike Vasil, and Calvin Ziegler.

If the Mets had been in this predicament, Francisco Alvarez would have been the first to step in. He was the best prospect not only in the Mets’ organization, but in all of baseball. Keibert Ruiz, a capable young catcher for the Nationals, is already on the team, but Alvarez could either platoon with Ruiz or play designated hitter.

Brett Baty, the #2 prospect, would probably be the next component. If not for the few weeks of MLB service time, he would be nearly CJ Abrams’ equal. He would be the Nationals’ future third baseman, since they obviously want to accumulate young talent.

Even once the original starter Omar Narvaez returns in a week or two, Francisco Alvarez must continue to serve as the primary catcher despite this manufactured dispute that is still being discussed on the radio.

Ronny Mauricio shouldn’t be too far behind, but with 11 mistakes as he moves to second base, the Mets are naturally being patient. Brett Baty is up and producing, Mark Vientos is up as well (and presumably about to receive more at-bats), and they should all be contributing soon.

However, they were wise to avoid taking Soto discussions too seriously.

Obviously, all of this is hypothetical, but it’s amusing to imagine what the Mets would have had to fork up to get Josh Bell, a solid rental DH, and Juan Soto, a player of a generation.
