New York Jets News: Fans Shouldn’t Be Concerned About Quinnen Williams’ Contract Extension

Quinnen Williams is inching away from the Jets.

Williams altered his Twitter bio to read “Defensive Tackle for…………….” despite being under contract with the Jets for this season.

Williams’ most recent tweet highlights the specifics of the four-year, $90 million (with $60 million guaranteed) contract extension that his fellow defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence signed with the Giants, making it clear that Williams is dissatisfied with the progress of those talks.

But fans should not be concerned with this and here is why!

New York Jets News: Fans Shouldn’t Be Concerned About Quinnen Williams’ Contract Extension

General Manager Joe Douglas assembled a solid roster for the New York Jets throughout the offseason, and in a major transaction, he acquired star quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The great defensive tackle Quinnen Williams’ unfulfilled long-term deal is the only concern that still exists.

Despite this, according to people familiar with the discussions, there is still hope that the two sides can come to an agreement. Williams’ long-term retention with the squad is expected, according to head coach Robert Saleh, who has expressed his lack of concern.

“I’m not worried at all,” head coach Robert Saleh said. “That thing will get done, and he’ll be here.”

Williams is valued by the squad and wants to remain a Jet in the long run.

That may also be a problem if Williams is aiming for $25 to $30 million annually.

Three-year cash flow and total guarantees are possible additional difficulties beyond the term of the transaction and the average each year. Daron Payne, Jeffery Simmons, and Dexter Lawrence all agreed to four-year contracts, but the Jets could want to extend Williams’ contract to get a better average salary per season.

Simmons’ four-year, $94 million contract swiftly eclipsed Payne’s four-year, $90 million extension that he inked in March. Lawrence agreed to a $90 million, four-year deal that was quite similar to Payne’s.

Williams’ agent, Nicole Lynn, could prefer that her client receive another chance at free agency in four rather than five years, when he is nearing his peak. This shouldn’t be an insurmountable obstacle, though.

Williams may face stiff resistance from the Jets if they force him to fulfill his $9.6 million fifth-year option in 2023 and then franchise him in 2024. However, Williams has been a strong player and a positive influence in the locker room, so they do not want to do that.
