New Report Reveals Kyle Shanahan Wanted Tom Brady and Mac Jones Instead, As San Francisco 49ers’ QB Conundrum Continues

In the past, it appeared as though Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers had come to an agreement that they would split ways in order to give Trey Lance a clear road to the starting position. However, the two are now stuck with each other as the team struggles to decide on the QB1. But, Kyle Shanahan wanted two other players instead of them – Tom Brady and Mac Jones.

Since Garoppolo revised his contract, the 49ers have now given Lance the keys to the house. But Lance is the same quarterback they chose to sit out the playoffs the previous year as Garoppolo recovered from calf, shoulder, and thumb injuries.

With Garoppolo’s return to the competition, the San Francisco quarterback depth chart is a little crowded. Since it’s unlikely that the club would continue to play with four quarterbacks, Sudfeld or Purdy will probably be dismissed as a result of Garoppolo’s return.

Kyle Shanahan wanted Tom Brady and Mac Jones at the 49ers

Tom Brady would be seeking to win his next Super Bowl alongside Tom Brady and Mac Jones if Kyle had his way. When Tom Brady became a free agent in 2020, according to former NFL general manager Michael Lombardi, Kyle Shanahan wanted to sign him, and the only reason he isn’t a 49er right now is that someone in the building once more persuaded Kyle out of doing so.

Some could ponder if Brady’s immobility would have suited Shanahan’s offense. It’s important to note that Kyle turned the sluggish Matt Ryan into an MVP in the 2016 campaign. A campaign that came to an end in Super Bowl LI, when Tom Brady defeated Shanahan after falling behind 28-3.

The 49ers owned the third choice in the 2021 Draft after making a transaction to ensure they would select one of the best quarterback prospects. The popular consensus had Mac Jones and Trey Lance as the leading possibilities.

People in the building apparently pushed Shanahan to rethink his mind as the Draft drew near, and the team selected Lance by selecting upside down on a high floor.
